UN Defends Inaction on Mass Rapes in Eastern Congo, Government Missing in Action
The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is on the defensive since the NGO International Medical Corps revealed early this week that rebels from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), and members of a local Mai Mai militia, raped at least 154 women in North Kivu, a few kilometers from a MONUSCO base.

UN Security Council calls for urgent action over mass DR Congo rape
The UN has said everything possible must be done to prevent atrocities like the recent rape of more than 150 women and children in the DR Congo. In an emergency session of the Security Council, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Congolese authorities had to fully investigate what had happened. The Council also said peacekeepers in the area should have done more to protect local people from rebels.

UN report says Rwandan army committed genocide in DR Congo
The BBC has seen a draft UN report that says crimes by the Rwandan army and allied rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo could be classified as genocide. The report details how they targeted Rwandan Hutu refugees and Congolese Hutus in DR Congo, from 1993-2003. It lists human rights violations committed by security forces from all countries involved in what has been called an "African world war".

One Survivor, 20 Dead after Plane Crash in Bandundu
A woman, who has not yet been identified, is the sole survivor of a plane that crashed in the city of Bandundu on Wednesday in early afternoon. She is in critical condition and receiving intensive care at the General Hospital of Bandundu.

LRA: UNHCR relocates 1,500 refugees from CAR to the DRC
The UNHCR has begun with the transfer of about 1,500 refugees from the Central African Republic to a newly constructed refugee camp in Kpala-Kpala, close to the town of Bondo in the remote district of Bas-Uélé. The Lord's Resistance Army attacks in CAR, north of the Mbomu river, which forms the natural border to the DRC, have provoked a massive displacement of about 15,000 persons within the CAR between March and May 2010.

FDLR Rebels Continue Campaign of Terror in Eastern Congo
Rebels from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) have been reported in the North Kivu region of Walikale, where they are, once again, conducting a terror campaign against the local population. From Saturday night to Sunday, FDLR rebels made an incursion into the village of Butua, some 12 km from the center of Walikale, and looted and kidnapped civilians, local sources said.
